Gizela Mickiewicz Hauled bolt

Gizela Mickiewicz is interested in the properties of objects. Her overriding question is that of the object in itself, its ontological status and the intensity of its presence, the moment when a thing dismantled into its component parts is pieced together from its primary elements in a completely a-hierarchical and unintentional way. At the same time the artist is intrigued by how a given thing was “made” (following her fascination one may observe the imprint each human being makes on each and every object), what functions it has and what can be done with it in an artistic action, what messages can be conveyed through it. All of this hinges on the knowledge about how a given thing is “used”. Then, having become acquainted with the language, Mickiewicz constructs her own sentences in it and thus we deal with a creative reconstruction. In principle, all of Gizela’s installations, irrespective of their scale, convey tiny messages and fractional truths. Moderation in the construction of metaphors stems from the pragmatic nature of her work, its effects generated by the fascination with what intelligence can do to matter. Therefore all takes places between the head and the object. It is no doubt important that Mickiewicz wishes to stay close to objects of everyday usage (she confines her language to “used-up” and ordinary words), so that the viewer may sense a departure from the regular course of things and follow the intention to read the signs left for him or her.
Mickiewicz smuggles her senses, supplies them inconspicuously, veils them and couples with delicate form. Hence the title of the exhibition, borrowed from the communication system of prison inmates. In the case of Gizela Mickiewicz’s exhibition the viewer must exercise caution not to miss an object of prime significance, hidden in the oesophagus.
