Piotr Bosacki movie with no sound

The last work of Piotr Bosacki I have seen entitled \’We know nothing\’, was simple but significant realization made for an exhibition of Penerstwo group. Moulded in brown plasticine object presents moaning family over the grave and an earth section under the tombstone. The deceased lying underground – something what mourners cannot be aware – is moving. Wanders along the circle. He is directly under the tombstone only for a moment, in the “culminating point” of a cycle. What is happening with dead man buried under earth? Rotary motion used in We know nothing reminds earlier work of Piotr entitled Wheelmachine. Mechanical object is composed of nine cogwheels which move the net placed on them – massive mechanism sets in motion delicate, simple structure.

Taken from Wheelmachine system of nine orbits appears in the newest Bosacki’s animation Movie with no sound. Yet this time engineering is hidden. Masterly visual machine is rooted in existential observation – mathematical pattern simply organizes it. In Movie with no sound grasped separately elements of human bodies freely wander in the screen. They change places and functions. Despite of formalist problem he imposes on himself, Bosacki asks about identity of things and human beings. Isn’t it incidental? Why sometimes we “don’t recognize the person”?

„I made this film – Piotr explains – because when one observes an old raisin sitting alone in digs, he is traipsing here and there. He will cut roll in the kitchen. Then goes for a television, will turn on, won’t watch and this is running. Will read paper a little in other room. Goes back to the kitchen and only will butter his roll. To the bathroom he goes then to fill bathtub with water, the tap is running. Then he comes back to finish newspaper. Just then in the kitchen he will put jam on a roll and carry it for a television. And so for all fucking day. Such man is like being in many places at the same time and for sure organizationally and maybe even ontologically is not a monolith, he is in decomposition”.

Essential problem in Bosacki’s animation is relation between the whole and its elements. The same elements, depending on configuration may create various totalities. On the other hand the same whole can be formed from different elements. Problem so formulated is a source of logical relativity and uncertainty. Actually nobody knows how this all works. This reserve, not to say cognitive resignation, associates with comical scene cited earlier in the text. We know nothing.
